For Immediate release
Incident: Attempted Escape by Eric James Azotea

On Thursday January 14, 2016 at approximately 11:00 PM, Deputy Jailers of the Carter County Detention Center disrupted an escape attempt by inmate Eric James Azotea.  Deputies conducting a roving patrol of the Jail were alerted by a motion sensor in the mechanical chase located behind Mr. Azotea’s assigned cell.  Within two minutes of the alarm, Jailers apprehended Azotea without incident.  Azotea used an improvised tool to dig out a cinderblock in order to gain access to the chase area and intended to use the same tool to dig through the exterior wall.

Eric Azotea is currently in custody awaiting trial on two counts of First Degree Murder.

Azotea is now charged with an additional count of Attempted Escape (Felony)

Respectfully,

Dexter Lunceford, Sheriff of Carter County
